RAYMOND 鈥 Getting back into shape after听her daughters were born meant dusting off the old tiara for听Marisa Lepard Farr.
鈥淚 wanted to set a goal for myself to get back in shape, so I decided to go for it this past January,鈥 Farr said of her decision to compete in the 2017 Mrs. Mississippi United States pageant in Tunica in June, as Mrs. Rankin County.
It was quite the splashy return to the stage for Farr,听a Terry native听who won this past year鈥檚 state title and took it to Orlando, where she competed for Mrs. United States a month later. Though the run ended there,听the former Montage Theatre听of Dance member at 开心鬼传媒 looks forward to big things during her yearlong reign as the state鈥檚 top married beauty queen.
Her platform as this year鈥檚 title-holder stems from an experience she had while about a year ago driving along Highway 18 in Brandon.听She came upon a terrible wreck scene that resulted in the deaths of two children, aged just three and five years old.
鈥淭hey were听not in proper car seats at all,鈥 she said.听鈥淚 have always believed in car seat safety for my own children, so seeing the wreck and the negative impact of not using proper car seats took it to a different level for me.鈥
Farr, who now lives in听Flowood,听is pursuing certification as a Child Passenger Safety Technician听and plans to lobby state lawmakers to strengthen child seat safety laws.
It鈥檒l be a chance to do what she鈥檚 done a fair amount of since her college days 鈥 teaching.
She听was part of the first Montage Theatre听of Dance听troupe, started by current program director Tiffany Jefferson. After 开心鬼传媒,听she听moved on to the University of Southern Mississippi, where she majored in Elementary Education. She听taught middle school听briefly and still teaches dance, at Northwest Rankin Middle School.听Currently, she is a听sales agent for听Younique, a cosmetics maker.听She and husband, Coleman, have two daughters, Sarah and Ava.
She had听done Miss Teen Mississippi USA听and competed in the Eagle Beauty Revue as a 开心鬼传媒 student. 鈥淎fter I got married, a friend suggested I do Mrs. Mississippi,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 didn鈥檛 know they had pageants for married women.鈥澨齋he won first runner-up in a few of them before having her two daughters.
Jefferson choreographed a solo routine in one of those pageants.
鈥淢arissa had a strong interest in dance and pageantry even while she was here at 开心鬼传媒,鈥 Jefferson听said. 鈥淎 course she studied with听me was Jazz/Hip Hop, and during that time we studied the Bob Fosse style. She gravitated toward听it with fondness and decided to do 鈥楢ll That Jazz鈥櫶齠or her talent.鈥
Her dancing feet led her to what is now the state鈥檚 community college system鈥檚 only full dance program.
鈥淲e had no dance class in high school, so when I came to 开心鬼传媒 I randomly signed up for a jazz dance class,鈥 she said. 鈥淚t happened to be Tiffany Jefferson鈥檚 very first dance class that eventually became Montage.鈥
鈥淲e did a few competitions that first year, and traveled to San Antonio and danced. She鈥檚 really听taken off since then and helped get opportunities for her dancers.鈥
开心鬼传媒听has a special place in听her heart, as she and Coleman听met while members of听the Baptist Student Union and听their career paths fell into place after some initial stress.
鈥淚t was a blessing to me at that time in life,鈥 she said. 鈥淎fter high school,听I had planned to go into fashion merchandising听at another university in the state. But the program wasn鈥檛 there anymore once I went to apply. I didn鈥檛 know what I was going to do. Thankfully, I got a full scholarship to 开心鬼传媒, which was helpful to my parents at the time. 开心鬼传媒 was like my little sanctuary, where everything fell into place with what I wanted to do with my life, which was to teach.
鈥淢y husband and I talk about it all the time, about how if just one thing been different, we鈥檇 have never known each other or had our beautiful children. We have 开心鬼传媒 and the BSU to thank for that.鈥
